Introductory Remarks
Dear Zesters,
In Wednesday’s post, Self Possession, I riffed on the general topic of like feeling good about yourself, and not being overly possessive or like scarcity-driven for those moments of self-satisfaction—but also allowing yourself to enjoy and embrace those moments. And I think I also kind of explored the concept of outer goodness and confidence stemming from internal alignment and placidity and, so, like, it was a bit meandering but I think also productive—at least for me!
What Do You People Even Want
The above graphic show shifting public sentiment as it relates to the TikTok ban. It’s definitely been one of the most interesting and kind of amusing things to observe from the sidelines, how something that was seemingly pretty bipartisan has so terribly upset an entire generation of chronically online GenZs who refuse to live life without their sweet sweet algorithm. It’s also kind of funny, but also a little sad—but mostly funny—how users are flocking to RedNote or RedBook to spite the US government and how also there have been some wholesome interactions between Chinese citizens and US citizens that could serve as the foundation for stronger geopolitical relations (probably not). It’s also funny to think about everything in the context of like how we perceive China (as a scary scary communist police-state, which, I’m not necessarily saying it’s not) and how like the Chinese perceive us—and having Chinese folks laugh at us not having like basic affordable healthcare and stuff—and idk it just all kind of makes you think. In general, there is such an interesting like destabilization of traditional power structures, globally, that sets us up for an interesting few decades, I should think. Grateful to be alive for it!
Concluding Remarks
There won’t be a post on Monday on account of the holiday. Have a lovely weekend! Watch Severance! TikTok your little heart out while you still can! (Even though Trump will probably save it come Jan 20.)
With infinite zest for life,
Luke
